Much of our health is determined by the way we live our lives, and nutrition choices are a huge part of that equation. Don’t beat yourself up and feel guilty when you’re not perfect. Eating too much or losing out to an urge is not a capital crime or a mortal sin. It’s just a mark of humanity, and you can get better at self-control as time goes by if you give yourself half a chance and learn more about it and practice it. Be forgiving of your human qualities rather than critical of them.
Do go out and get a couple of nice outfits that are comfortable and have a wonderful happy holiday season. You can plan on beginning your diet New Years’ Day, dropping 10-20 lbs. in January,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and make someone else very happy when you give those outfits to Goodwill because you’re swimming in them!
For most people, just avoiding a weight gain this holiday season will be a fantastic success. This is entirely possible, without a lot of anguish and self denial, if you follow my list of Dos and Don’ts. Here they are:
Don’t leave it up to the point in time when you are presented with a challenge, like an offer of a lunch out or a pastry, to decide what to do. Have your answer ready before you face the tempter. “No thanks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I’m saving my calories for the parties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I don’t gain weight this year.”

Don’t try to diet, discover that you can’t keep to it, and then decide “It’s impossible. I might as well forget about weight control and enjoy everything until after the first.” Giving yourself permission to binge for a month will create a weight gain that will take all of next year to get rid of.
Don’t try to avoid the “bad foods” at parties and dinners. You’ll only feel cheated and want to eat them later, when you’re alone. Plan on the kind of things you’ll want to have and find out ahead of time what kind of calories are in those things and what amounts you’d like. Remember, there are no bad foods or bad calories, unless you’re talking about calories in food you don’t like! Also remember, women usually have a “calorie budget” of 1800-2200 a day to maintain an ideal weight, and with a little advance planning, you can fit in just about anything on that.
Do decide that you care about your health, no matter what, even if your behavior isn’t always the best all the time. Never decide you don’t care, even when you slip up.
Don’t decide it’s impossible to control yourself during the holidays. Self control is entirely possible, especially when you know you have those party days to look forward to. I teach some great self control techniques in my book, The Anderson Method,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but you already know some, such as self-talk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like reminding yourself “Those would add cellulite and make my pants tight” as you walk by the box of candy at the nurses’ station.
Do have a definite plan at the beginning of each day for it to be either a “health nut” day or a party day. Develop a clear idea of what you’ll be eating that day and when,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before you leave in the morning
Do save your day’s calories for the parties on your party days. If you eat a lot during the day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’ll still eat a lot at the parties and feel awful. If you plan ahead and have your calories at the event, they will taste better, you’ll have a great time, and you’ll feel great. And, no guilt! You’ll have had just what you loved, enjoyed it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and accomplished your health goal.
So don't beat yourself up this holiday season trying to stick to a diet. Just follow these tips, and don't forget to pick up a copy of The Anderson Method to start your diet off right once the New Year hits!

Regardless of what's going on in our lives right now, we have so much to celebrate and be grateful for. We don't have to wait until we close the deal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], win the game, finish the project, get to retirement, fall in love, reach out goal, or whatever else it is we feel we need to accomplish in order to celebrate.
I don't have the time or money to celebrate right now, there's work that needs to get done
Things aren't yet as good as they "should" be for me to stop and celebrate
People will think I'm weird, naive, or obnoxious if I celebrate too much
With so much suffering in the world and people having a tough time these days, it's not appropriate for me to celebrate
I'll celebrate, for sure, but not until everything turns out exactly as I want it to
How do you feel about celebrating? If you're anything like me and most of the people I know, you probably enjoy it.
Can you relate to any of these?
Too often in life we think we have to have a "legitimate" reason to celebrate - a birthday, winning an award,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an anniversary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the completion of a project, the accomplishment of a goal, taking a vacation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or some other "special occasion." While all of these things can be fun to celebrate, we don't have to wait for them to happen to feel justified in our celebration.
I asked him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "What's your take on American culture, given that you didn't grow up here." He paused for a long time; then asked me, "Can I be honest with you?" I said, "Of course." He then said, "I think most people in this culture act like spoiled brats."
Sometimes the best thing for us to celebrate is the mere fact that we've made it to this point in life, especially if things have been challenging, which for many of us they have been recently and/or at times in our lives.
However, I notice that as much as I like to celebrate, I sometimes find it challenging as well. Here are some of the reasons that I use not to do it:
We were recently at Disneyland with our girls. We love it there! One of the many magical aspects of Disneyland is how they fully embrace the power of celebration. Every day at Disneyland feels like your birthday, favorite holiday, and New Year's Eve - all wrapped into one. The parade down Main Street is even called "Celebrate You."

At Disneyland they celebrate just to celebrate - on Tuesday mornings and Thursday nights, on special occasions and holidays, and on every single day throughout the year. What if we did more of this in our lives - even and especially when things get tough?

I was in a cab in Houston a few years ago, heading back to the airport after speaking at an event for Chevron. The cab driver and I got into an interesting conversation about life, family, and the state of our culture in America. The driver told me he was from Ethiopia originally, but had been living in the United States for about twenty years.
Celebrating is not only an after-the-fact phenomenon; it's a way of being and can become a way of life if we choose to live that way. Stop for a moment right now and think of all the things (big and small) that you can celebrate about your life right now. I was really struck by this focus on celebration when we were there most recently and realized that one of the main reasons people come to Disneyland (and keep coming back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like us) is that it's an excuse to celebrate. And while they do an amazing job at Disneyland with the rides, the characters, the shows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fireworks, and more - the real magic behind it all is the power of celebration.
"Why do you say that?" I asked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a bit surprised by his response. "Mike,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said, "I'm from Ethiopia...every day here is a good day. I don't understand why people just don't walk around here with their hands in the air saying 'THANK YOU'."

3. A buddy who will always be there for you. This is the lady who is super organized, always has time to help you out, who can listen and give good advice that’s practical, who can come to your rescue if you need it. Be sure to be especially sensitive to this woman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because her needs get buried and then YOU can step up to help her.
If you have those four parts in your experience, then you are experiencing great balance in your life and your Super Mom duties can be handled easily. But if you are not balanced, you now know right where to work to make that balance happen for yourself. Here are the ideas again:
Mental health is a pretty broad term, and can change from person to person based on their experiences. I think a good definition has to include the well-being of your brain itself, plus a harmonious psychological and emotional state. Does it seem humorous to think about this while you know all about the challenges you have as a Super Mom that pull you this way and that?
1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A mom in the same situation as you are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Mom problems are more often than not resolved by suggestions from friends who are going through the same stage of child development as you are. She “gets it.” And here’s an opportunity for one on one adult time while your children play together.

Super Moms need conversations with adults. In fact, they long for them. This applies to mothers of teenagers as well as those with toddlers. Providing for a child’s needs and only entertaining a conversation with your children is not enough for a mom. You must create situations where you interact with adults, so that you feel nurtured, too. Enjoy a date night with your spouse, or a girls night out, or attend a class that interests you.
5. A Friend Who Isn’t Afraid to Be Honest. You don’t have time in your challenging mom experience to waste time being all “nice” with your fine self. You need someone to point out the blemishes, but who loves you just the same. You don’t need someone who’s bossy – just someone who’s blunt and honest. Be sure she knows that once you live with her honest words for a few days so you can absorb their truth, you’ll get back to her.
6. I’ve Walked In Your Shoes Friend. A mature woman who’s already lived what you are now experiencing can be an invaluable help to you, because she identifies through her own experiences what you’re going through and by sharing the wisdom she unfolded while living her own life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can have the “frosting right off the top of the cake” so to speak and get really practical help for your Super Mom situations.
I was privileged to hear about an all men’s group where one of the fellows shared something horrible he’d gone through. This started an avalanche of the sharing of similar experiences from the other men in the group. The leader of the group said “Guys, it is this precise kind of sharing among women that I believe let’s women live longer than men.” That story really struck me, and it made me so grateful for the women in my life with whom I can share regularly. I’ll bet it struck you, too, didn’t it?

4. A Friend Who’s Glamorous. This feminine side of you still needs nurturing even if you don’t even wear lip gloss these days. She might also have a wardrobe you can borrow in a pinch. Be sure to tell her how she augments your Super Mom life.

Prep and Cook Time: 10 minutes
Serves 2
Directions:
1. To Quick Broil,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], preheat broiler and place an all stainless steel skillet (be sure the handle is also stainless steel) or cast iron pan under the heat for about 10 minutes to get it very hot. The pan should be 5 to 7 inches from the heat source.
2. Rub salmon with fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper and spread dijon mustard on fillets before broiling. (You can Quick Broil with the skin on; it just takes a minute or two longer. The skin will peel right off after cooking.)
3. Using a hot pad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pull pan away from heat and place salmon on hot pan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], skin side down. Return to broiler.
